Modeling a Carafe with Hexagon


What causes those "ghost" shaded areas in an object?

I am trying to make a curved driveway for my mansion, so I start with a 300 x 300 x 1 block, select one of the short edges and chamfer it, and all looks OK. Then I export it as an obj. file, import it into DAZ, and get that infuriating grey shadow, but as the second image shows, there are no separate edges or faces, it is not selectable in Hexagon, it is "not real". What am I doing wrong, or is this just a weakness of the software? Hexagon or DAZ? I am still using DAZ 3, tried DAZ 4 but did not like it. The first image shows that the original block in Hexagon already had a diagonal line separating a light and dark area, and it flashed the shadow on and off depending on viewing angle.

 

 

 

D/S is closing Hexagon

I work with the 2 open so often didn't notice this pattern 'til today.

D/S 4.15 [reg release] and the beta 14.15.0.14 are CLOSING Hexagon "poof"

Open D/S, create a primitive or load a figure, doesn't matter, select that and send it over the bridge to Hexagon. Hexagon opens ... close D/S, Hexagon goes "poof" ...

it is in D/S's log file. It is closing Hexagon. This is NOT desirable..

So while we wait for Ascania or whoever is so interested in fixing Hexagon's coding and/or D/S's ... the work-a-round is to open Hexagon FIRST. Make a primitive [anything] and send it over the bridge so it opens D/S. Then load whichever figure it is to be worked on in D/S and send it back over the bridge to that session of Hexagon. Now one can close D/S and Hexagon will stay open.

New to the Hexo world - Question on its usability

Hi,

I wanted to know if;

1. can you take a purchased item from daz 3d studio and port it to Hexo for morphiong?

2. Can you do the same for clothing ot props...

3. Can you do the same for purchased environments?

4. Is hexo allowing you to change or add new texture to the ported items? Like a green environment can make it pink or add text to a sign etc..

interesting display, in Hex Gallery thread, of reference "planes" for symmetrical models

I liked the way "A3DLover" included partially intersecting reference planes in his Hexagon workspace, to help make a spaceship that was symmetrical along at least one axis. This per his screenshots in the Hex Gallery thread here.

It's probably a minor, common technique for experienced modellers, but I don't think I have seen it done before... I know that personally I tend to move my geometry builds really close to one of the reference grids; anyway, cool.

One of the things I love to do with Hexagon is to make my own props for use in Daz Studio, helped along by Danny Ripley (CG-Dreams) and Gary Miller (Geekatplay..Com) and others who have passed on their Hexagon know-how.

I'm far from their skill level but I would like to do a tutorial on making a sword, so here goes (I hope I do not mess up too much) -

Could anybody explain to me the meaning of the "cutoff" property and how the bucket symbol ( "apply the displacement or bump to the entire object") in the displacement/bump channel is used?

Just need basic understanding but can't find anything with google...

How-to Lengthen faces mid-object? **SOLVED**

I am perplexed on what seems like it should be simple. If you make something like a barbershop pole - a long pole with caps on both ends and it is basically finished except it came out a little short - so you want to lengthen the pole between the caps. How do you do it? Most functions just effect the middle selected and do not move the top and bottom further away. I can probably delete a row of faces, move the top up, and bridge the gap ... but it feels like there should be a more elegant way to do this? In essence, I want to make the object taller without stretching the end caps. Thanks.

So I just found out I can't use Hexagon on my Mac (2020) because it runs on 64 and Hexagon is 32 bit. There is no Install button in DazCentral and no update to install it.

I really want to get into creating 3D objects and using them in Daz 3D. Any recommendations on how to do that or what I can use or am I out of luck?

Doesn't hexagon support unicode?

Hi

Used unicode characters in text file(source file saved in unicode format) worked fine 

Copied and pasted the characters into text window for 3d text,didn't work

Just shows the usual squares, when it's not supported characters 

Hexagon too old for this?

Export obj weld vertices even if I didn't checked in ....

I tried to export object, where some polygons were dissociate. I didn't checked the "merge equal points" or anything ... but when I open the object, those vertices are welded :(

In the import -export settings I didn't checked the merge points ....
Any solution? Other than create separate "groups", because I need to split many polygons separately to keep them as hard surface in daz studio. But now those are smoothed .. and it would be too many work to select edges and set smooth weight manually in daz studio.

Recover Hexagon Serial Number

I purchased Hexagon 5 years ago, under an email I no longer use.  My computer has crashed  TWICE since, and when I attempt to use Hexagon (which I've re-installed on my current computer) it requires my long-lonst serial number.  

How do I, in my situation with a lost email and new computer with erased memory, recover an old Hexagon Serial Number? or should I completely uninstall and re-install it instead?

Hezagon and OpenSubdiv

A problem that I have long had is that I export all of my DS assets to Blender, but there are subtle differences in the way that DS and Blender implement OpenSubdiv that creates rather small but unacceptable differences in the model in Blender (I think it has to do with edge weighting). As a result, I have to export heavy, already subdivided models from DS to Blender in order to maintain fidelity.

That in and of itself would not be so bad, but it makes creating morphs in Blender rather difficult because the subd cage I am morphing in Blender and subdividing does not look the same as the morph, once it is applied and subdivided in DS.

But I was wondering if learning just enough Hexagon for creating morphs might solve this problem? Does anyone know if DS and Hexagon produce vertex exact results when subd is applied to the same cage?

Decompressing the Hexagon file to make manual changes

Sounds weird, I know but ...

Hex has a bug when using the Daz Bridge where it appends .01 to texture file names on each crossing of the bridge and eventually they get so long it causes windows errors.  Rather than work through the Hex materials / shading domains interface, I just want to jump in to the underlying hex file and bulk change all the crap names back to their original names.  But the hex file is some sort of compressed file and I've not yet found the secret to decompressing it to allow an edit in eg notpad++

Does anyone know if / how to decompress the .hxn file???

Any news on when Hexagon will be updated so we can use it on recent Mac operating systems? I know about the work-around by installing Windows on my Mac and using the current Hexagon. I don't want to do that! I want to know when Hexagaon will be updated so I can get back to using it.

Hexagon 64bit for Mac????

I just tried to update Hexagon as my older version is 32bit - I need 64bit. The beta version is available but I cannot install as it's an unknown developer. I tried clearing it through system pref/ security settings but no success. I'm guessing it's the "beta" which is the issue(?) Although looking into this further it seems development of Hexagon has stalled. Possibly a dying horse? Shame. 

Anyone have an update?

I'm trying to save a character as a morph & the only (successful) way I know is via Hexagon.

Serial Number?

I opened Hexagon for the first time in a long time and got a pop-up asking for a Serial Number. I have no idea where this serial number can be found.

Anybody know where I can find it?

HELP, Please: Editing Geometry in Hexagon breaks morphs in Poser?

HELP NEEDED: What am I doing wrong?

  • I want to simplify the geometry of a chainmail bikini top (classic Red Sonja costume).
    • There are these little "bracket" pieces connecting the chainmail disks and I want to remove them. (See the b&w pic with the blue highlights.)
  • I opened the OBJ file in Hexagon and figured out how to select and delete the pieces.
  • I saved the file as an OBJ:
    • I tried both "Save As" and "Export" as OBJ
    • I left the settings to default
    • In both cases, I kept the name of the original Geometry file (don't panic, I lept a back-up of the original).
  • When I open Poser Pro 11, the new Geometry file loads (the brackets are gone), however:
    • The top no longer fits properly.
    • The breasts are too small
    • I cannot morph the top with the properties dials: they no longer work.

Clearly, I am doing something wrong (probably when I save/export the OBJ file). Or is there something I need to fix in the CR2 file?

What can I do to fix this?

Can't install Hexagon

When i tried to install Hexagon, the installation cancelled itself at 50% and now everytime i click 'install' it starts installing but instantly stops. How do i fix this?
